Yankee or Dixie...What's with that??

Looks like the war between the states is still alive and well. Harvard University has done a study to determine what dialect you speak...whether you are "Yankee" or "Dixie". Don't get me started on this...I warn you...like we don't have enough battles to fight here in the good 'ol U.S. of A. that we need to dredge this issue back up! Being a transplanted Yankee living here in the south... I've learned to adapt. Yes, I have listened with a straight face (ok-maybe a slight snicker) while watching a fellow Texan turned beet red over the idea that anyone would have the audacity to use the "TX" symbol for Texas...because, as we all know "Texas is too big to be abbreviated!!!" Take heed you wise ones, this type of controversy can create quite a stir. No sirreesir... Far be it from me to promote any type of dis-unity. Although, in all fairness, let it be known I am quite true to my heritage, true Yank, yep, that's me. So, I won't mention the fun little "quiz" you can take to find out which "side" you fall on. Now, I wouldn't want to be viewed as so shallow or anything, so I won't even go there. Nope.... hmmmm...

I shouldn't even allude to that fact that I got a tad bit "worked up" over the results of my "64% Dixie" score... Especially when my dear husband informed me that he, in fact, scored true blue Yank. Or the fact that I made him review each answer with me and only three of his answers differed. Three lousy answers were enough to doom us to a mixed marriage?? To add insult to injury, the quiz called my score ...”a definitive Southern score”. Who made up this test anyways?? I mean really...the majority of my answers fell in the “common throughout entire US” or “around Great Lakes”, mid-west or NE and I still got a Dixie score? Whats with that? Be assured, because I’ve held to my stanch position of a loyal “Yankee” (or at least loyal Buckeye) over the past 25 years of living in Texas, our friends here will NOT let me live this one down. But no, I don't want to stir up any more controversy.
OK, well maybe I do...I mean really...Hey, sympathize with me here a minute…Don’t I get any credit??? I still call a carbonated soft drink “POP” when EVERYONE around us says “Coke” or “soda”. (“Bless your little heart…ya’ll want Cokes? What kind do ya want? I’ve got Dr. Pepper, Diet Dr. Pepper, Coke or Diet Coke?”) Or what about the fact that I clicked on “Crawdad” instead of “Crawfish”… doesn’t THAT count for anything? And another thing… I’m sure that statistics are much higher for those that address a group of people as “YOU GUYS” than those that say “Youse”, “You’un”,” yins”! Why wasn’t “You Guys” given as an option? Huhhhh??
That does it, I conclude that this test is “FIXED”. It probably isn’t even put out by Harvard U, but instead by a group of Texas A&M Aggies that are trying to prove, once again, that the world revolves around “the south” (Texas in particular). Yep, that’s the only explanation. Lawd O Mercy, God knows I love our Texan friends…but they have to learn not to mess with my Yankee loyalties. Bless their little hearts.
Ya’ll have a good day,
Diane

Ha! Once again, you crack me up! I'm heading over to take the test and will let you know how I did.

By the way, you do sound an awful lot like you are from good old TX, I mean TEXAS! Hey, why didn't anyone tell me about this rule of the Texans?

I know all those people laugh behind my back when I visit there....except my daughter because she is a true-blue Yankee...woohoo!

44% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category.

Oh no, y'all are wearing on me.

(my results kept saying normal for anywhere in the US...go figure!)

OK, ok, no big surprise here....I'm 89% dixie. If you heard me, you'd know in a heartbeat. Y'all. Hey! Ya wanna coke????;-)

Well, mine said 72% dixie, even though:

10/20 of my answers were "common to the whole US"

7/20 of my answers included the Midwest/Chicago/Great Lakes/ North East. etc. categories

And only 3/20 of my answers were specific only the Southeast.

Yeah...I'd say something sounds off about that!

Well, well, 55% DIXIE!

obviously a dixie made up the quiz and worked out the scoring. which makes me wonder... who are these people who sit around all day making up silly quizzes... 'what kind of flower are you?' or 'what time of day are you?' now that i think about it... it's a pretty cushy job.

have a great weekend.

I scored this:
61% (Dixie). A definitive Southern score!
Very interesting since I have lived in the Northwest for 30 years and was raised in North Dakota. I did spend a couple years of my early childhood in Florida - but still, I hardly think of myself as a southerner! I guess I'm just confused!

I turned out:
41% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category. Most of mine said normal for most of the US too.

I've taken the quiz before and I'm happy to say that I'm almost 100% Dixie. Good thing, too, because I was born and raised right here in Northeast Arkansas and never lived anywhere else.

Besides, I'm Southern enough not to give a great hairy rip what some dumb ol' quiz says, anyhow. ;o)

Hope your weekend is blessed whether you have a pop, a soda or a Coke, Diane. ;D (I say Coke most of the time, or soda, never pop.)

Hugs,

Diane

This was so cute! :) I just took the test again since I didn't remember my score...seems I'm 58% Dixie- barely in the Dixie category, it said.
Even though I've lived almost all my life in the NW, my dad did come from Texas, so I guess it makes sense that I'd have just a little Dixie in me!

And I loved your post below...got to eat those yellow, green and red foods! LOL

Wow, I thought I would be more dixie than I am... I am only barely dixie at 53%. So I am even more Yank than you! (Even though in all of my genealogy I only have two yankees, and that was by marriage.) ;-)

You know what though... I don't think they considered that many of the Dixie states were not really in the deep south... like Missouri was a border state. Also I would not really classify Virginia as deep south either etc.. so I really doubt it's accuracy.

But it was funny to imagine you as a southern belle with her mint julep and her drawl! LOL ;-D

I'm 47% Yankee (just barely) Since I'm a native Californian I didn't really know what to expect!

Oh, that is funny. I am headed over to take that quiz. I too am a Yankee transplanted as a Southerner. Althoguh I was born in the south but moved very young so I don't think that will count.

Well ... we'll just have to see.

I turned out to be 45 % Yankee, which surprised me. I thought I'd be much less. I have lived in the south for so long that I thought I'd have more to show for it than y'all.

It is funny, when I was answering those questions I could just see my childhood (spent in the north) coming out. Potato bugs, Crawfish, stuff like that. I could hear my grandma saying those words.

That was fun.

Very funny post, Diane! So was the colorful diet. ;o) And I did take the test. I'm Definitively Southern.

I *had* to take this test since my mom is from and lives in Alabama. I came out 61% Dixie. You'd think being born and raised in California that I would have a different score--but I'm ok with it--I love the south! : )
