Family Recipe Book

One of my favorite "gifts from the heart" I have ever given was the joy of passing on family recipes to the second generation. This labor of love began years ago with anticipation of presenting each of our girl's their own copy of a recipe book containing all of the favorite recipes they'd grown up with. This would be a good foundation to begin their own collection. My plan was to present this gift to them at their Bridal Shower.

Erin was our first daughter to marry and although I was unable to make the "deadline" for her shower, I was able to present it to her within a few months of the wedding. (Busy times and a flurry of wedding planing took higher priority since they were going to college out of town and wanted to get married before summer break ended).

Ashley & Casey were married a year ago April and this time I was able to meet my goal. I presented her with her own copy of our Family Recipe Book at her Bridal Shower.

What a joy to pass on this keepsake to each of our girls as they venture into their new position as wife and homemaker! This book has been in process literally for years, and I still continue to update our files with great new recipes almost on a monthly basis! I look forward to presenting Megan with her very own copy as well upon the event of such a happy occasion.

I see you have pictures in it too, and I imagine some sweet memories jotted down. It is like a scrapbook of food pleasures! What a great idea. I remember when I got married my mother-in-law was always happy to share recpipes with me when I asked. I had never learned to cook and wanted so badly to do a good job. I'd call her and ask, "how do you make such and such?" and she'd read me a recipe over the phone or talk me through something. I loved that! I would have loved to have gotten her mess of files when she died. She did have a mess of them.

What a wonderful keep sake.

We have one of those also.
We made one up for my grandma.
It is called "From Grandma with Love Great Recipes from the kitchen of Gertrude...."
Every child and grandchild picked out one or more of their favorite foods that grandma prepared for us at holidays. It is such a treasure to me as my grandma passed away almost 11 years ago now. Everyone was so glad that we took the time to do it.

I've realized how seldom I use actual recipes, except for special holiday dishes. Kinda sad. My book would have a lot of pictures of quesdillas.

Hi there! I'm surfing over from a comment you left at Tammy's Family Doin's.

Anyway, I like your blog--and this idea is lovely. My keepsake, though, will be a little on the thin side. lol. :(

What a lovely idea! I have starting to work on a "hope chest" of sorts for my little girl and will have to add something like this to her chest eventually. :o)

I put together a book of Lindsey's favorite recipes for her and Beto as a gift when they married, too. I'm not sure how much she uses it as she is learning to cook like a Mexican now instead of teaching him to eat like a Dutch family eats.
Love your photo. You both look so beautiful :)

What a beautiful gift, Diane. I have often thought about doing something similar for my kids (they are younger than your dtrs).

So special! I was about to say that my husband's dear mother gave us a hand written recipe book filled with family recipes... but then I saw that my mama already told you above me. :)
