Meet some of our "friends"...
I recently had fun practicing with my camera on the wildlife around our yard and capturing the critters that venture up on our porch. I began filling our "hands" feeder with sunflower seeds and have been entertained daily by the squirrels that venture, oh so cautiously, up on our porch to gorge themselves on the treasured seeds. I took these pics through the window of our living room and this little guy kept a close eye on me. He seemed to know that he and I were separated by two thicknesses of glass and that he was fairly safe to keep chomping away on his stash of sunflower seeds.
Looks like he has a "look-out" buddy there in the background to keep away the competition!
Look at this pile of sunflower seed hulls that have been carefully picked over and discarded.
He will sit out there for hours!
I moved a little and he got rather concerned!!
Awwwww, a Cardinal. Reminds me of my native state: Ohio. (It's the state bird)
Wish I knew my birds better....what's his name?? Note: Thanks to Bee, we now know that this little fellow is a Chipping Sparrow! Plus, she shared a great new resource: www.whatbird.com for identifying birds. Also, I should have put this verse up with the picture in the first place...Thanks Barbara H for reminding me to look it up!Matthew 6:26 "(A)Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?"
Freddie the Lizard lives on our front porch and visits often.
I wish I could report that these beautiful and fragrant peonies came from our yard...however, we can not grow them here in the hot, humid south. :-( I found these at our local Kroger store and HAD to purchase them as a sweet reminder of the myriad of bushes we had in my yard when I was a young girl. I must have stuck my nose in these for a whiff at least 50 times the first day they graced our kitchen table. They bring back special memories for me. Funny how (it is said) that out of all our senses, smells are the strongest trigger of memories. I used to collect large bouquets of peonies for my Mom and she'd place them on our kitchen table. The funny thing I remember about them is how many LARGE black ants would always be attached to my bouquets and end up in the house along with the flowers. :-) I wish we could grow lilacs, daffodils and peonies here as I have such fond memories of those from my youth. Hope you enjoyed meeting some of the "Locals" at our home. Also...if you haven't left your input on my "blogging survey" below...please take a moment to do so before you leave. Thanks for stopping by!

Great pictures!! I love that hands feeder. I've never seen one like that. Kind of reminds me of the Praying Hands that are at the entrance of Oral Roberts University here in Tulsa.
I love that little feeder! I always had my nose in the peony bush at my parents house - and ours always had ants too!
Lilacs are another that I just love - hoping to get a bush planted soon. We had one at our old house but haven't put one in here yet. At our other house, we had it just outside our bedroom window and it was so wonderful to smell while laying in bed.
Thanks for jogging those memories for me.
Thanks Diane. I don't know of a new feature in blogger for putting pics in the headers. I wonder if it is just the same I have been usuing all along or something easier.
I do not have a photo editing but I have downloaded one I am trying. I can't get it to do what I want but I have the next best thing - a 16 year old who is very techy and expreienced in photo editing, video editing, etc. So maybe I will put him on it and he can teach me.
I am going back now to read your post on the friends. It looked intriguing with all the critters. Thanks again. I may try the Picasa that you suggested.
I grew up in St Louis area and then Chicago area. We too, had peonies and daffodils and tulips and OH - LILACS!!! I miss it all down here.
It is funny that you remember the ants. That is what I remember about peonies too. So cool you found them at Kroger ... without the ants.
Love your squirrels. They are so cute it is hard to get mad at them for stealing from the bird feeder. I guess the answer is to give them their own stash. Neat hands feeder too. Great post. Thanks.
Awesome pics of the squirrel.. our dogs just have a fit if one comes around!
I think your bird is called a "chipping sparrow." While I was looking for it, I found the coolest bird web site!! Here is the link to your sparrow page... just hit home and see all of the features of the site!

Diane,
These are great pictures! Your windows must be very clean to be able to get those shots!
Loved the feeder. Was it purchased like that, or was it from something else?
I would say you landed the correct info Bee...thanks for letting me know that my 2nd bird photo is of a chipping sparrow! Also, be sure to check the latest results on my "test post". Are we tech savy or what??!!
Tracy, I bought the "hands feeder" from Hobby Lobby for half price. (this is my standard response to many cute things around our home...I LOVE finding stuff there at 50% off!!) It was in the garden section and I imagine it was made as a feeder. I placed it down on the porch and began filling it with seeds to give the squirrels their own feeder. I was hoping they'd leave the bird feeder alone, and it has helped for the most part. Every once in awhile I see the squirrels at the bird feeder and the birds and the squirrel feeder!
I love that little feeder! Reminds of the verse about the Lord caring even for sparrows -- another in the Psalms about how He gives to all their food (I really should look them up!)
Love your "hands feeder" and getting it for 50% off is a bonus! We tried giving the squirrels their own food but they only want the birdseed from the bird feeder..go figure!
Your peonies and cardinal are beautiful. We don't have those here!
xo
what great pictures. i love the one of the lone squirrel. thanks for sharing.
Tech savy? don't know that you could call me that yet.LOL
BTW... This what I received from my Google reader feed...
Your posts all dated for the 25th came across in this order. Is that how Bloglines did it for you?

"Ok...the results of my test are in.. etc"
Great photos, but I expected nothing less from you :)
I went to blogline or whatever it is, but I was lost. I got all confused and didn't have a clue what I was doing. MommaRoar is going to help me out. She is a youngen and is going to try to help this old lady out.
Hope your found your scale, hehe. I smashed mine. I love peach ANYTHING!
Those are tremendous pictures, Diane!
You certainly have some interesting "neighbors"! :)
(And I love the feeder, too...how unique!)
Such great pictures, Diane. I think squirrels are so fun to watch, the hands feeder is beautiful, I love it!! It looks like it was busy around your yard today!

To answer your questions...
Barbara H...I was thinking of that verse as well when I purchased that "hands" feeder and posted this verse, but I never took the time to look it up. So now... here it is: Matthew 6:26 "(A)Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?" and also: Luke 12:6&7 "Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows." Wow...God's watch-care over us is incredible!!
Bee...this is interesting as Bloglines didn't show each post individually...only the final (updated) post. Does this mean that when I go back several times to try and get the paragraph breaks and margins to show up on my posted blog the same way as they look on my "composition page"...then you see each and every one of those attempts at correction??? EEEKKKK! Very interesting results from the field testing department. Thanks Sherlock! :-)
Wow! GREAT pictures!! I am very impressed with your photography skills. What kind of camera do you use?
I love your feeder, and you got some great pictures. I especially like the one where it looks like he has a friend helping him with the lookout.
The only visitors we have around the new place are insects. We have insects of all types. We even had a praying manits yesterday. I have never seen on in life, only on t.v. or in a book.
Funny, what memories a smell can trigger.
I *love* the squirrel standing on his hind legs..almost looks human. I especially love squirrel hands.
Your photos are lovely!
Mishel-In answer to your question: I shoot mainly with our Digital Canon 20D SLR. We own a few other cameras, but these shots were all with the 20D.
I LOVE that picture of the little squirrel standing up! What good photos you got. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
I also love the little standing squirrel picture. All of the photos are good, and I enjoyed the blog.
I love all the pictures.
The peonies are just gorgeous!
Sandy
I love the bird feeder - never seen one like it before and like Penless Thoughts it reminded me of "Praying hands" Love the Cardinals as we do not have them in this part of the world.
I will read the story.
Wow, this is one of the most beautiful blogs I've been to. I love the little squirrel pics because they remind me of my Yorkshire Terrier. I want to come back and spend more time here when I get on line again. Again, the photography is breathtaking to me.
