Bloggityville Stuff

So, my friends, now that I have been blogging for several months now, I have a few questions for you. Call it a “survey”, if you will. PLEASE…let me know what you think!! Lurkers…Please...feel free to de-lurk and introduce yourself!! If you don't know how to leave a comment...check here.

1) Do you use a service like Bloglines to help you keep track of your blogging buddies?

2) Are you able to check in with each of them every day or do you just try to make your rounds a few times a week?

3) What is the most common way you are introduced to new blogs: Recommendations or links in the body of a blogger’s post, following links through a sidebar “blogroll” listing or clicking on links of bloggers in the comment section?

4) When you ask a fellow blogger a question / or even just leave a comment under the “comments” section of their post/blog, do you prefer they post the answer under the comments section of YOUR blog (to make sure you’ll see it)…or do you try to go back to their blog-remember which date you posed your question and recheck their comments to see if they answered your question? Which method do you prefer?

5) Do you always leave a comment to acknowledge your visit at a fellow blogger’s site…or do you often “read & run” (lurk)? How do you feel about the practice of “lurking”?

Thanks for sharing with me your insights and thoughts on your blogging preferences!

Like many of you, I am now using Bloglines to help me keep up with my blogging community friends. It has been a great way to have everyone’s address in one place and keep track of new posts as they come up. If you aren’t familiar with their free service, check them out here. Because Bloglines is my new “address book” and my posted blogroll is sadly outdated, I think I am going to remove it from my sidebar. For those of you that enjoy meeting new people by clicking on links (like I do), you will still be able to do that through the links provided in the “COMMENTS” section. I am blessed that several of my fellow bloggers are kind enough to visit on a regular basis and leave their “calling card” in the form of a comment. I have enjoyed the visiting back and forth between blogs and the development of many new “cyber Pen Pals”. Thanks for taking time to visit and interact with me through responding to my humble writings. This is how friendships are developed!

1) Do you use a service like Bloglines to help you keep track of your blogging buddies? Yes. I use Bloglines, and Google Reader. Both because I had problems with Bloglines once for several days. This way I have a back-up.

2) Are you able to check in with each of them every day or do you just try to make your rounds a few times a week? I TRY to read them each day, but I'm not always able.

3) What is the most common way you are introduced to new blogs: Recommendations or links in the body of a blogger’s post, following links through a sidebar “blogroll” listing or clicking on links of bloggers in the comment section? All Three.

I like to go back to their blog. I think that it is beneficial for the other readers to see their answer as well.

5) Do you always leave a comment to acknowledge your visit at a fellow blogger’s site…or do you often “read & run” (lurk)? How do you feel about the practice of “lurking”? I used to always eave a comment, but I really was spending too much time, so now I read and run alot. I still comment often though. I don't want people to think that I have forgotten them! I don't mind people lurking, but I do wish that they wouls say hello every once in a while.

Hi Diane,
I don't know Tracy, but her answers match mine almost exactly except for #4. When I asked a question, I prefer an email response, and I also respond to questions that are left for me in that way. (if there is an address available.)
I think many of us are trying to find the best way to balance blogging and real life.

Hi Diane.. I am very inconsistant with what I do. LOL But I did get "google reader" which I really like!
RYC..
Yeah we really need to order that Bethlehem DVD... we really enjoyed it!! To tell you the truth I have no idea what this sky stuff really means... but it sure is intriguing! I am thinking if I keep watching, then maybe one day I will pick up something! ;-)

I'm rather 'puter challenged and as such, haven't made the move to find out what bloglines is all about. At this point it sounds too techy. Pitiful, huh?

Each day I try and visit every blog I have saved on my blog sidebar. I don't always go back and check if that blog person responded to me.

Available time determines if I leave a comment. Lately I haven't been faithful in responding to comments and I would like that to change. I notice that some blogs don't have the comment section available to readers. I don't want to go that route because I've made some sweet friendships here.

Bless you dearly...

) Yes, bloglines - it is great!

2) I try to check them each day.

3) All of those listed

4) I like when they come back to mine or email me. If I know a blogger typically answers the question on their blog - I go back and check. I try to do both on my blog - I'll leave the answer for others to read and I'll go back to their blog and either answer it or tell them I answered it.

5) I like to leave comments - because I like getting comments! I know I have lurkers because my site meter shows more readers than comments - hopefully they'll de-lurk!

Have a blessed day!

I have to agree with all that Tracy said except no.5. If I read a blog/post I always try and comment something. If I don't comment after reading it is because life interrupted:)

1) Yes, I do use Bloglines.

2) I try to make my rounds a few times a week. I just visit too many to be able to read every day.

3) Both. But often when I find a blog that I love, I enjoy clinking on their favorite blogs! I have found some good ones that way!

4) Good question! When I ask a question on someone's blog, I try to remember to check back, but I often forget. So, I enjoy when they respond on my blog or at least say they answered my question. I rarely read the comments once I've left a comment.

5) I almost always leave a comment, unless (like Trella said), I get called away or interrupted.

Have a blessed week!!

Oh, my. You are hilarious my friend. Your comments to my posts had me laughing this morning. No, I don't have a laptop. I can't sit in my garden to blog and "weed" as you suggest. Rats! I think you are on to something with that one.

OK, to answer your questions.

1)Bloglines. Because I do not have to visit everyone everyday to see if they have something new. Saves time.

2)Everyday. But if I am away from a computer for days on end (a situation that causes me severe distress) Bloglines saves it all for me in a neat little package.

3)Comment links. Pretty much exclusively that way.

4)I prefer that people answer me in my own comments section on my blog. This way I do not have to remember to go back to theirs and read comments. And also, the comment comes straight to my email box so no matter which day they have said something, I can read it. I like that A LOT.

5) Nope, only when I have something to say. Or if I have not said anything in awhile I might leave a note to let them know I am still visiting.

All of these questions are ones that I wrestled with myself when I first started. It gets easier and more comfortable.

By the way. What program did you use to create your header on your page. It is so lovely and it is exactly what I'd like to do too. I can't figure out how. Perhaps there is a tutorial?

P.S.
Diane - Great post. I tried to contact you on your e-mail link but it didn't connect. Would it be okay for me to link to this and write something on it too? You can e-mail me your answer at penlessthoughts@gmail.com. Thanks!

1. I don't know how to use the blog lines yet. I should figure it out as it would save me time.

2.I try to check each person's blog daily. Sometimes I don't have time to. Especially on weekneds. I usually take the weekend off. It seems we are out of town most weekends.

3. All 3.

4. Either way. I try to check back on their blog.
When someone asks me a question I try to post the answer both on my blog and their blog too.
If someone answers me on my blog it is also in my email.

5. I most always leave a comment as I like to get comments back.
I agree with the others...the only times I may not comment are if I get interrupted by the kids or the phone or someone at the door.

I agree it is a great way to make friends.

I thank you for your blogging friendship. It has been fun getting to know you and all other bloggers.

Hey Diane... by any chance do you know if when I "tweek" on my post after I have submitted it does the Bloglines feed send you my "before edit" posts or does it "wait" for a few minutes. I am horrible at proof reading again after I have posted and then editing it in some way or the other!
Love, Bee

1. I've never used bloglines, but I guess I need to check it out.

2. I read my favorite blog each day, those who post everyday. I try to read others every few days knowing they do not post everyday.

3. I like recommendations and just clicking on a link when a new friend checks out my blog and leaves me a nice comment. I almost never use someones blogrole.

4. I prefer to have someone answer right on my blog. I know this is not proper ediquette, but I do not care. I have had much fun just chatting back and forth with friends over silly stuff from their blog to mine. I enjoy being spontaneous.

5. I leave a comment when I feel I have something worth while to say or something to brighten someones day. If I have enjoyed the blog, but have nothing to say (rare for me) I will just come back the next time :)

Hi Diane,
I loved your weeding/blogging suggestion for Becky today! I thought maybe I should try that..hehee.

1. I'm a huge fan of bloglines!

2. I try to visit the blogs with new posts every day. I usually blog in the evenings after my kiddos are tucked in bed.

3. I don't have any blogs in my sidebar but I do use other blogrolls to find new blogs. I click on bloggers in the comment section quite often too.

4. I usually go over to their blog to answer questions. I never know if they are going to come back to my comment section and see if I answered them.

5. Whoever comments on my posts I am always sure to stop by their blog and leave a comment too. I agree with you that this is how friendships are developed!

I had fun answering your questions!!

1. i use netvibes. i have a page set up with feeds from all of my favorite blogs. with the feeds, i know whenever there is a new post. i had never heard of bloglines (it is probably similar) but will be checking it out as well as google reader.

2. like previously mentioned, i check several times a day for new posts. once i read a post, i try to comment it right then and there.

3. i check out so many blogs. i guess i'm kinda addicted. so i check almost any link that is given, whether that's in the body or in the sidebar or thru the comments. i also just surf thru the "next blog" in the nav bar.

4. it's hard to remember to go back to a previous commented blog, so i prefer someone answering me thru my comments.

5. i almost always leave a link on regularly visited blogs. other that i read, it depends on if i feel like i just have to say something. just depends. i think lurking is just part of the blog world. it doesn't bother me.

1) I do use Bloglines. It saves a great deal of time. Not everyone I read posts every day, so I would waste a lot of time clicking through my blogroll only to find nothing new. Or -- I'd see the newest post at the top and not realize they had 1 or 2 more beneath. With Bloglines I can tell quickly who has posted and check out everything they've posted since my last time visiting.

2) By checking in do you mean actually going to their site, or just checking with Bloglines to read new posts? I do the latter every day, sometimes several times a day. I don't always go to the actual site -- I like to because I like to see the actual blog and feel like I am really visiting that person, but it just depends. If I am short on time or if there are a lot of new posts, I just read from Bloglines.

3) These days it is usually through links in an actual post. In my early days of blogging I would peruse other people's blogrolls in their side bar and found a lot of good blogs to read that way. I don't do that much any more because I have so many that I keep up with now. I also don't always read all the comments to a post before I post a comment, but sometimes if I do read something that strikes me in some way, I'll click on that person's link and check out their blog.

4) Every comment doesn't call for a response, but if a blogger for whom I left a comment had something they wanted to say in response I'd prefer they come to my site because I don't always check back every place I have commented to see if there was a response (that would deter my commenting because it would take up so much time!) One exception is when there is an ongoing discussion of some sort over some issue.

5) I don't, and I should -- I know how much it means to me when people comment. I don't mind if people lurk on my blog -- I've wrestled with the craving for comments and have had to just leave it with the Lord and ask Him to minister to people whether I know how He is doing it or not. But when my blog stats tell me my blog has had 150-200 hits that day (and there are 0-2 comments -- it makes me wonder. :)

1) I use and like Google Reader. Since blogger is connected with google now, it's very easy to sign up any blogger blogs, and the sign-in is the same, which is nice.

2) Depends. I enjoy checking in daily, but do miss days sometimes.

3) All three, but a recommendation from a blogger I like and respect is an extra motivation for me to check out a new blog!

4) I don't mind going back and checking. As a reader on blogs, I like to see the responses to others' questions right there in the thread. But somebody made a good suggestion, of responding in-thread and leaving a quick note on the asker's blog letting them know you did so.

5) I'm guilty of being a lurker a good deal of the time, but I'm trying to get better at leaving comments at least occaisionally on the blogs I visit regularly! I don't plan to comment on every post I read, however, because it would just take WAY too much time:op

1) I can't believe I have gone without bloglines all this time, but I have. I may be finally getting it (or google) this summer, though.

2)I usually make rounds several times a week.

3)All three, but usually the first two.

4) I have been known to occasionally go back on their blog to check an answer, but usually I have a hard enough time just keeping up with everyone each week!

5)I have been blogging a year and hardly ever lurk. Unless it is a post that I simply have no reply for...or once in awhile, I read a blog that is getting 50 replies, and I don't bother replying. But 99% of the time, I reply, because I know how much I enjoy nice replies!

I know I'm kind of late in answering...

1.) I use Bloglines

2.) I *try* to visit my bloggy friends a couple of times a week. More often if time permits.

3.) Links, blogrolls, comments

4.) I go back to their blog to check the answer.

5.) I try to leave comments--but I do occasionally lurk--especially on blogs that receive a ton of comments.
